"Asheville is a little unique in that it's a getaway town, and there's an active beer scene," said Bob Townsend, editor of Southern Brew News, which reports on the regional beer scene. "There's a good vibe there, and a lot of good breweries". - Asheville Citizen-Times Article Asheville Cabins |
Beer Tasting is an Asheville Destination - Move over Coffee HousesRecently, I revisited a past time that slipped away from my daily routine over the past couple of years. As usual, I decided that I needed to do this and someone popped up saying, "Hey, I just joined a fabulous Yoga class with Kelly McKibben, that I think would really benefit you." I live by the philosophy that you create your world and all the players in the movie, in every given moment. As you know, this, "taking responsibility for everything that happens" attitude can be terrific in one hand and a rude awakening in the other hand, when personal challenges come along. This time I was pleased that I found a terrific class. Stop! It gets better. As we went around the room introducing ourselves on my first class, I found that these simple sweat pants, hair pulled back, no makeup ladies were incredibly well balanced successful women: one was a newspaper publisher, one a real-estate broker, one an artist, one a successful writer, and one a brewery owner. Which brings me to this article... From my research more and more people are traveling the country visiting breweries just like wine tasters. Like the coffee and wine connoisseurs, beer is becoming a sought after fun travel "thing to do". Below see some information on places you may want to visit when you come to Asheville - a truly great place to visit and live. The more you explore the more you find. How it StartedAsheville's beer scene began in 1994, first with the opening of Barley's Taproom on Biltmore Avenue, followed almost immediately by Highland Brewing, originally located in the lower level of the same building. In 1997, the Blue Rooster brewpub restaurant opened on Biltmore Avenue, and while it closed the next year, other breweries have thrived. Jack of the Wood and its Green Man Brewing Co., Two Moons Brew-N-View (now Asheville Pizza and Brewing), French Broad Brewing and Pisgah Brewing have combined to make Asheville the liveliest brewing town in either North or South Carolina. A sixth brewery is under construction in Asheville's French Broad River arts district. Another major element to Asheville's beer tourism is the Brewgrass Festival, an annual celebration of craft beer, happening Sept. 22 at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. "A full third of our guests come (from) in excess of an hour from Asheville," said Brewgrass founder and director Doug Beatty. "We have an unbelievable number from the Tri-Cities area, a lot from Charlotte and Atlanta, and we've had them from Germany and Scotland." A Timeline of Asheville Microbrews and Brew Pubs1988: Chickadee's and Rye opens on Haywood Street with selection of imported and bottled beers. The location later becomes the Bier Garden. 1993: Western North Carolina's first craft brewery, Smoky Mountain Brewing Co., opens in Waynesville. A small operation, it closes before the beer boom explodes in Asheville. 1994: Barley's Taproom and Pizzeria opens with 10 beers on tap. Highland Brewing rolls out first kegs of Highland Celtic (now Gaelic) Ale, the first commercial brewery in Asheville since before Prohibition. 1997: The Blue Rooster, Asheville's first brewery restaurant, opens on Biltmore Avenue with specialty beers made by Highland Brewing and sold only at that location. It closes the following year. Also in 1997, Jack of the Wood opens at 95 Patton Ave., as a pub, restaurant and brewery. Asheville's Brewgrass craft beer festival also makes its debut in 1997. 1998: Two Moons Brew-N-View opens at 675 Merrimon Ave., a long-closed twin cinema. The concept combines a restaurant, craft brewery and discount movies. In 1999, it evolves into Asheville Pizza and Brewing. 2001: French Broad Brewing opens near Biltmore Village, founded by Jonas Rembert, who had been making beer for Jack of the Wood. 2005: Pisgah Brewing opens with all organic beer in Black Mountain. Also, Asheville Brewing opens at 77 Coxe Ave. as sister operation to Asheville Pizza and Brewing, and Green Man Brewing moves from Jack of the Wood to a bigger brewery on Buxton Avenue with a taproom known as "Dirty Jacks." 2006: Highland Brewing moves to new bigger brewery at the Blue Ridge Motion Pictures studios in east Asheville and closes the original brewery on Biltmore Avenue. Also, Asheville Brews Cruise begins operations, taking visitors on tours of local breweries. 2007: Construction begins on a still unnamed brewery to be located in the Wedge Gallery building in Asheville's French Broad River arts district. -Arrachme
